Libby Commutation Undermines National Security

Following George W. Bush's commutation of Scooter Libby's 30-month prison sentence, defense lawyers across the nation are preparing a "My client should get what Libby got" defense. One of the first defendants to try this, according to the New York Sun, is "an alleged Hamas operative," Mohammed Salah, who will be sentenced on obstruction of justice charges next week and faces up to 22 years in prison.

Federal prosecutors are also worried that Bush's declaration of Libby's "not unusually long" sentence as "excessive" may "make it harder...to persuade judges to deliver appropriate sentences."
