Libby Commutation Undermines National Security

Following George W. Bush's commutation of Scooter Libby's 30-month prison sentence, defense lawyers across the nation are preparing a "My client should get what Libby got" defense. One of the first defendants to try this, according to the New York Sun, is "an alleged Hamas operative," Mohammed Salah, who will be sentenced on obstruction of justice charges next week and faces up to 22 years in prison.

Federal prosecutors are also worried that Bush's declaration of Libby's "not unusually long" sentence as "excessive" may "make it harder...to persuade judges to deliver appropriate sentences."

Mitt Romney Also Agrees With Libby Commutation

Mitt Romney, along with Fred Thompson has called Scooter Libby's commutation "agreeable." 272 requests for pardons or commutations were filed with the state of Massachusetts during Romney's four years of governor. All were denied.

Thompson: "Very Happy" About Libby Commutation

Despite several editorials across the country disapproving Bush's decision to commute Scooter Libby's 30-month prison sentence, Presidential candidate Fred Thompson had this to say about it:

I am very happy for Scooter Libby. I know that this is a great relief to him, his wife and children. While for a long time I have urged a pardon for Scooter, I respect the president’s decision. This will allow a good American, who has done a lot for his country, to resume his life.

This Is Bullsh*t!

Senator Barack Obama responded with this statement, and I completely agree:

This decision to commute the sentence of a man who compromised our national security cements the legacy of an Administration characterized by a politics of cynicism and division, one that has consistently placed itself and its ideology above the law. This is exactly the kind of politics we must change so we can begin restoring the American people’s faith in a government that puts the country’s progress ahead of the bitter partisanship of recent years.
